Stitchloom

Knitting chart maker

In short: Make a knitting chart from a photo or drawing that accounts for your gauge — knit stitches are wider than they are tall, so the chart uses your stitches and rows per 4 in to avoid a squashed picture. Rows are numbered from the bottom, RS rows read right to left, and each row is written out with colour runs. Free: unlimited on-screen patterns, colour key, materials list and PNG chart download. PDFs up to 60×60 are always free, plus your first full-size PDF; after that a larger print-ready PDF is $2.99 per photo, or $7.99 for 30 days of unlimited PDFs.

Why gauge matters

A typical worsted stockinette gauge is 20 stitches and 26 rows per 4 in. If you chart on square cells, a circle knits up as a flat oval. This chart maker adds rows to compensate and draws the cells at your gauge's shape so the preview matches the knitted result.

FAQ

How do I make a knitting chart from a picture?

Upload the picture, set your gauge and stitch count, choose the number of colours and the chart is built instantly with written rows.

Can I use it for fair isle?

Yes. Keep to 2 colours per row where possible; lower the colour limit and check the written rows for long runs that need catching floats.
